Today was a pan-Canadian “Student Day of Action” for demonstrations in support of reduced university tuition fees. I got to see these protests in both MontrĂ©al and Ottawa today—lots of students bundled up with toques and mitts and carrying signs in frigid weather. How bad are the fees? Well, they’re at their worst in Nova Scotia, where an undergrad might have to pay all of $5,630 CDN (about $4,750 US) for a year’s tuition. Average annual tuition at a U.S. public four-year college in 2006-2007: $5,836 US (about $8,099 CDN). Average number of American students protesting in subzero temperatures about this: 0?
