Going to Charlottetown
January 29th, 2007 at 20:24Yesterday I made my way from the Atlantic coast towards the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the birthplace of Canada—Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. This city, which is the provincial capital of Canada’s smallest province, is also notable for being outstandingly charming and home to a decidedly frozen harbor (a change from the ice-free ports of St. John’s and Halifax that I’ve been in over the past two weeks). In fact, I got here by crossing the world’s longest bridge over ice-covered waters.
On this side of it, most of the downtown is shut or operating on limited schedules, everyone waiting patiently for a summer surge of vacationers. I’ll be here until Wednesday, visiting with the Community Legal Information Association of PEI and enjoying having the place—famous for its potatoes—virtually to myself.
